A Fast, Search-Friendly Magento PWA Built for Mobile Shoppers
We rebuilt Bigmen's storefront as a React PWA and tuned it for speed and search, so more shoppers find the store and stay to buy.
Technologies That We Used
A modern headless stack that keeps Magento as the engine, React as the face of the store and performance tools working in the background.
What We Do
From redesign to speed and search visibility, we handled everything needed to move Bigmen from a traditional Magento frontend to a modern PWA.
-
PWA Storefront Development: Built a React-based Progressive Web App with Magento PWA Studio to replace the old frontend.
-
Website Redesign: Redesigned the homepage, category pages, product pages, cart, checkout and My Account for a cleaner, modern look.
-
Magento Backend Integration: Connected the catalog, customers, cart and orders to Magento 2 through GraphQL APIs.
-
Speed Optimisation: Improved Core Web Vitals through code splitting, lazy loading, image compression, caching and CDN delivery.
-
SEO Optimisation: Kept pages search-friendly with server-side rendering, meta tags, structured data, XML sitemap, canonical tags and clean redirects.
-
Installable, Offline-Ready Experience: Added service workers and an add-to-home-screen option, so the store feels like a mobile app.
Project Overview
Bigmen is an online men’s fashion store with a broad catalog and many seasonal campaigns. The traditional Magento frontend was slow on mobile, and the brand wanted an app-like experience without losing its search rankings. We rebuilt the storefront as a React PWA using Magento PWA Studio, with Magento 2 still running products, customers and orders in the background. Along the way we optimised speed and SEO together, so the store loads quickly, works on weak connections, can be installed on a phone and stays easy for Google to read.
Project Challenges
A PWA move touches design, code, speed and search at the same time, and a mistake in one can hurt the others.
- Rebuild every storefront page in React while keeping all Magento features working.
- Protect SEO, since a JavaScript-based storefront can hide content from search engines if built carelessly.
- Reach strong mobile speed and Core Web Vitals scores on image-heavy fashion pages.
- Make loading fast even on slower connections.
- Recreate custom features from the old theme, such as banner sliders and promotions.
- Keep the new frontend easy for the team to update later.
Project Solutions
We planned the frontend, the data layer, speed and SEO together, so none of them had to be fixed afterwards.
- Used Magento PWA Studio as the base and customised its components for Bigmen's design.
- Connected all product, cart, customer and order data through Magento's GraphQL API.
- Added server-side rendering and complete metadata, so search engines can read every page.
- Added structured data for products, an XML sitemap, canonical tags and 301 redirects from old URLs.
- Split code by page and loaded images only when needed, using compressed modern image formats.
- Cached key pages and assets with service workers and served static files from a CDN.
- Rebuilt promotional banners as reusable React components, so campaigns are easy to update.
- Tracked speed and search results with Lighthouse and Search Console after launch.
Our Development Approach
We worked page by page and measured speed and SEO at each step, so the live store stayed safe while the PWA took shape.
